Malawi Intellectual Property
This week, while driving to Blantyre, I noticed a store sign that read:
WE SALE (sic) DVD VCD CDS & MP3
WE BURN MP3 CD DVD
WE DONT BURN MALAWIAN MUSIC
Unfortunately, I was not able to stop and confirm that this last line is enforced. Several Malawians have confirmed that protection of domestic intellectual property rights is a common occurrence. The Malawian music industry is, to be generous, small. Can it be that there is an informal system of trade protection that has been established my CD burners?
